Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass yesterday in front of 125,000 people in Central Park, and Harlem Gospel Choir had the honor to sing for the pontiff.
This was the highlight of the Pontiff’s historic 4-day visit to New York City and a highlight in the career of the choir.

On June 22, 1990, Harlem Gospel Choir sang in front of 60,000 people at Yankee Stadium to honor newly freed President Nelson Mandela and Winnie Mandela.
Yankee Stadium resounded with the chant of ”Amandla! Amandla!” the Zulu word for power, as the Mandelas appeared at 9:55pm. At the end of his speech he thanked the city, saying, ”The people of New York, we admire you, we respect you and, above all, we love you. I am a Yankee’
